Distance learning, education technology make headlines
Over the weekend, distance learning had not one, but two chances to shine in the spotlight when both Newsweek and The New York Times published articles highlighting the immense value of mixing education and technology.
Five years ago, a student interested in taking an online course or enrolling in an online program essentially had one option: sign up on the Internet for a for-profit school. Now, he or she can, of course, still go with option #1 or explore other avenues at, for example, traditional universities. As online education became more popular among students in recent years, schools began to take note and action; enrollment of students in online classes has certainly increased and, equally importantly, so has online learning offerings at brick-and-mortar institutions.
"…Distance learning has moved into the education mainstream at stunning speed over the past couple of years, as technology allows ever-richer, more-interactive learning experiences online—and as college costs continue to rise and classrooms are packed to capacity,” according to the Newsweek article on the growth of online learning.
Online courses and online programs at higher education institutions are becoming increasingly more available, and “many educators believe that online learning holds the greatest promise for expanding the capacity of the U.S. higher-education system.”
Also benefiting from technology in classrooms are secondary schools and their students, and it appears as if California high schools are prime examples, according to The New York Times’ article on education technology.
The Golden State’s leaders in both government and education have recognized the financial and educational potential of e-learning and open source materials. There are now state initiatives to provide quality education through digital tools and to start waving goodbye to heavy, expensive, and traditional textbooks.
As more and more schools begin to encourage the use of laptops, podcasts, and Web sites in classrooms as teaching tools, educators will undoubtedly find that students can learn equally well and possibly even better through an online medium (see Study: Students engaged in e-learning performed better).
Overall, as the public’s awareness and understanding of the numerous benefits of online education continue to grow, e-learning is becoming increasingly more appealing at all levels of education.
