What Is: Distance Learning

Distance Learning n : the delivery and consumption of education through the online medium. In this education process, instructors and students are separated by physical distance and are not always in the traditional classroom setting. Technology enabled by the Internet such as dynamic web pages, video streaming, group chat, and discussion boards allow for interaction between and communication among online students, their peers, and instructors.

Distance learning encompasses classes, courses, certificate programs, degree programs, and continuing education programs where the curriculum is delivered either entirely online or partly (“hybrid”).

Though it has been practiced long before the arrival of the Internet, distance learning has recently gained popularity and is now most commonly associated with online course and online programs.

Distance learning is sometimes also referred to as: distance education, online education, e-learning (or elearning), online learning, distributed learning, open learning, and remote learning.
